Zero-click search vs. your website: what small businesses need to know in 2026

More searches end without a single click than ever before. Here’s what that actually means for your website — and what’s still worth doing about it.

Type a question into Google today and there’s a good chance you never click anything. An AI-written summary answers it right there, on the results page, and you move on. That’s not a hypothetical — it’s already the majority behavior.

We build websites for small businesses, so this isn’t an abstract search-marketing trend to us. It’s the question clients ask in some form every month now: “If AI is answering everything, do I still need a website?” Here’s the honest answer, backed by the actual numbers.

1. The numbers are real

Pew Research tracked what people do when Google shows an AI summary at the top of a search: they clicked a regular link just 8% of the time, compared to 15% when there was no AI summary — roughly half the click-through rate.

Zoom out further and the trend gets sharper. SparkToro’s clickstream data puts the U.S. “zero-click” rate — searches that end with no click at all — at around 68% in early 2026, up from about 60% just two years earlier.

Most searches on Google now end without anyone visiting a website at all.

2. It’s uneven — and that matters for you

Here’s the detail that gets left out of the panic headlines: AI Overviews don’t show up evenly across every kind of search. They cover the large majority of comparison and question searches — “best CRM for coaches,” “how does SEO work” — but only around 5% of transactional, buying-intent searches, things like “web designer for therapists” or “book a consultation near me.”

Translation: the searches AI is absorbing are mostly research-phase, top-of-funnel questions. The searches that actually bring you a client are still mostly landing on real websites.

3. Your website’s job changed — it didn’t disappear

A website used to be where discovery happened. Increasingly, it’s where verification happens. AI still needs somewhere credible to point to, and a customer who’s already decided you might be the right fit still wants to land on a real site — one with your actual work, your actual pricing, your actual reviews — before they book a call or send an email.

A thin, outdated site loses more ground in this world, not less. A detailed, accurate, well-built one becomes the thing that closes the decision AI helped start.

4. What actually helps

None of this calls for panic or a rebuild. It calls for a few specific things, done properly:

  • Answer the real questions on the page. A clear FAQ section, in plain language, is one of the few things both AI systems and human visitors reliably use to decide you’re worth trusting.
  • Keep your business information specific and consistent. Services, location, pricing range, hours — stated clearly, not buried in a PDF or a contact form.
  • Don’t trade speed for polish. A slow site loses both the crawlers indexing it and the visitor who clicked through despite the odds.

This is largely what our SEO Setup add-on and every site we build already account for — it was good practice before AI Overviews existed, and it matters more now, not less.

The fix isn’t chasing the algorithm. It’s having something worth pointing to.

AI search didn’t remove the need for a real website — it raised the bar for what that website has to prove once someone actually lands on it. That’s still the part a properly built site handles, delivered in 5 days, not a template that looks like everyone else’s.
