Is your Squarespace site ready for AI search?

Squarespace makes it easy to launch a beautiful site. It doesn’t automatically make ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overviews recommend it. Here’s a practical checklist for site owners.

Ask ChatGPT to recommend a wedding photographer, a bookkeeper, or a yoga studio in your city, and there’s a decent chance it names a business running on Squarespace — the platform now powers millions of small business sites. The question worth asking is whether it would name yours.

A beautiful Squarespace site used to be enough on its own. In 2026 it isn’t, because the thing reading your site to decide who to recommend usually isn’t a person scrolling — it’s an AI system parsing the code underneath it. Here’s a practical checklist for Squarespace site owners.

Why this matters more for Squarespace owners specifically

Squarespace templates are built to look right first. That’s the whole appeal — pick a template, drop in your content, and you have something polished in an afternoon. But “looks right” and “reads clearly to a machine” are two different problems, and Squarespace’s defaults only solve the first one.

Most Squarespace sites we audit have never had their SEO panel touched beyond the page title. That’s not a criticism of the owner — it’s a genuinely easy thing to skip when the site already looks finished. It’s also exactly the gap that decides whether an AI system can confidently cite your business or quietly skips you for a competitor who filled theirs in.

A template that looks great to a person can still be invisible to an AI system reading the code underneath it.

The 2026 Squarespace checklist

None of this requires switching platforms or hiring a developer. It’s five settings and habits, all available inside Squarespace itself:

  • Turn on the SEO title and description overrides. Page Settings → SEO lets you write a real title and description for every page. Skip it, and Squarespace auto-generates one from your content — usually the first sentence it finds, whether or not that sentence actually explains what you do.
  • Use real heading structure, not just big text. It’s easy in the Squarespace editor to make text large and bold without ever assigning it an actual Heading 2 or Heading 3. Visually it looks the same; structurally, an AI system can’t tell it’s a heading at all.
  • Add an FAQ section in plain language. A short block answering the exact questions customers actually ask — “how much does X cost,” “do you serve Y area” — gives an AI system short, quotable answers instead of making it guess from a paragraph.
  • Fill out Business Information completely. Settings → Business Information feeds your site’s structured data. An incomplete profile — no phone number, no service area, no hours — is a common reason a technically fine site still gets skipped.
  • Write real image file names and alt text. “IMG_4021.jpg” tells a search or AI system nothing. “downtown-bakery-storefront.jpg” with descriptive alt text does — and it’s a two-minute fix per image, not a redesign.

What Squarespace can’t do for you (and what to do instead)

Squarespace’s SEO panel covers the basics well, but it stops short of a few things that genuinely move the needle: custom schema markup (FAQ, LocalBusiness, Review), fine-grained control over heading hierarchy across some template blocks, and clean semantic markup in sections built with certain layout tools.

None of that requires abandoning Squarespace — it requires code injection done properly, which is a small, one-time job. Every Squarespace site we build at Helprspace ships with schema markup and clean structure baked in as standard. Our SEO setup service adds the same thing to an existing Squarespace site too — no rebuild required.

A two-minute self-audit

Open ChatGPT or Perplexity right now and ask it something a real customer would ask — “best [your service] in [your city]” or “who should I hire for [what you do].” Read the answer carefully. If your business isn’t in it, and a competitor’s Squarespace site is, that’s not bad luck. That’s a checklist item above you haven’t done yet.
